Pale Tussock Caterpillar
A macro shot of a Pale Tussock Moth (Dasychira pudibunda) Caterpillar taken in Leonardslee Gardens near Horsham. The caterpillars appear from July to October and the moths themselves are seen in May and June.

Whilst we were out walking in Germany we found one of these caterpillars on a pathway.
There is a very similar looking caterpillar with the latin name Calliteara pudibunda which is found throughout Europe and elsewhere. There is some more information here.
I have noticed the Calliteara pudibunda is sometimes referred to as a the Red-Tailed Moth but I wonder if there is some confusion here.
