Pale Tussock Caterpillar

pale-tussock-caterpillarA macro shot of a Pale Tussock Moth (Dasychira pudibunda) Caterpillar taken in Leonardslee Gardens near Horsham. The caterpillars appear from July to October and the moths themselves are seen in May and June.

  • Whilst we were out walking in Germany we found one of these caterpillars on a pathway.

    • There is a very similar looking caterpillar with the latin name Calliteara pudibunda which is found throughout Europe and elsewhere. There is some more information here.

      I have noticed the Calliteara pudibunda is sometimes referred to as a the Red-Tailed Moth but I wonder if there is some confusion here.
